The Internet is a phenomenon like no other. It has become the spring board for a lot of other seemingly non-related ventures: from the advancement in communication tools, to evolutionary changes in the various business schemes, and finally to pivotal moments in the sports industry. One pivotal moment of the said industry is the advent of online pari-mutuel betting.
What is Pari-mutuel Betting?
Pari-mutuel betting is one of the most popular forms of betting systems in the world. Its popularity is fueled by the Internet. Pari-mutuel betting works this way: all bets of a particular type are accumulated or pooled together. From that, taxes and house takes are automatically deducted. Pay-off odds are then calculated by dividing or sharing the pool among the placed wagers. If this description is still confusing, think of the working principles of the lottery. Think of how placing more bets increases the prize money; and then think of how that prize money is divided equally among winning ticket holders.
Pari-mutuel betting is often state-regulated, and is offered in most places where horse sports racing (or any type of gambling) may be considered illegal. Before the Internet, this type of wagering system was offered at OTBs or off-track betting facilities. Players placed wagers on the events without physically being present to observe the races. These players then watched the race through a live feed: usually from a TV screen or radio broadcast.
When horse racing enthusiasts suddenly shifted gears to take full advantage of the Internet, race broadcast through Internet band streaming or simulcasting became an overnight success. This is the reason why the transition from placing wagers at OTB to online bet placing became relatively easy.
Online Transaction Processing Systems
Our company, Kanati Inc. is a developer of pari-mutuel betting software, called Online Transaction Processing Systems. We became an official business corporation on January 31, 2005. Prior to that, our founding members had worked on different aspects of the horse racing industry like race tracks operations, wagering systems of standard OTB, and advanced deposit wagering software.
We have worked with major tote companies and data-service-providers in the world. These companies are AmTote, Auto Tote, Charlson Broadcast Technologies, Equibase, LVDC, TrackData, TrackMaster, Robertson Communications and United Tote.
Here at Kanati Inc., we have always tried to take advantage of what the Internet has to offer. Even before we started to provide business consultation and outsourcing services to various e-commerce websites, our company has always been associated with online pari-mutuel betting. We have been creating Online Transaction Processing Systems for a number of companies now.
